Periodontics

Periodontal Disease or Periodontitis is an inflammation of the gum, i.e. the tissue holding the tooth. It is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults.

The gums may become inflamed due to the bacteria contained in the plaque on the surface of the tooth. If it is left untreated, it can lead to bad breath and, eventually, tooth loss; it can also affect the gums, bones and other supporting tissues of the teeth. This issue is also known as being called the ‘Silent Disease’ due to a lot of people being unaware they have it until the advanced stages. Ensuring that you have regular dentist appointments with us here at Dorking Smiles means that we can keep a close eye on your teeth and gum health and notice any changes. We can then treat these changes quickly and effectively before advancing further.

You must keep an eye out for any of these symptoms and book a visit to us if you notice any of these in your mouth. Although signs and symptoms are highly varied, they may include:

  • Reddening and swelling of the gums
  • Gums that bleed on brushing together
  • Loose teeth
  • A bad taste in the mouth
  • Bad breath

At Dorking Smiles, our specialists here are able to treat Periodontitis. The severity of the disease can vary, and it depends at which stage we have found the condition depends on which treatment method would be best for you. Will will always recommend the best plan for you and talk to you through everything before proceeding with it.

We focus the treatment on plaque control, as plaque is the principal cause of gum disease. We help you improve oral hygiene with a consultation covering the way you clean your teeth and the proper brushing techniques you should be using. Removing plaque and tartar from under the gums is especially important, so our nurses can do this with our scale and polish treatment.

Once your active treatment has been successfully completed, it will be necessary for you to see the Dental Hygienist every three months for the first year after your treatment. This is to maintain your oral health, prevent further problems and help to keep the progress of your gum disease under close review in case any re-treatment is required.

If your gum pockets are deep, often the case around the molar (back) teeth, periodontal (or gum) you may require surgery. However, our Specialists will try to avoid the need for surgery and talk through all the options to decide what is best.

Our specialists will do everything possible to avoid the need for surgery. We will assess your response to this treatment throughout the initial phase and then decide if surgery is necessary depending upon the success.

Gum surgery is used to revitalise the lost gum and bone that forms around your teeth. The healing process is quite rapid, with most patients’ treatment healed within one week.

Dental Implants

A dental implant holds a replacement tooth or bridge. An artificial tooth root is surgically placed into your jaw and integrated into your bone structure with a new tooth, crown, or bridge attached to this implant. This means implants are often more ‘tooth-saving’ than traditional treatments since they do not rely on neighbouring teeth for support. Dental implants is an extensive surgery and there are other methods before this one.

It is the process of inserting artificial tooth roots into the gum in the space of the missing teeth. These implants will bond with your jawline, allowing the dentist or oral surgeon to place replacement teeth like crowns, bridges or dentures to the root to form the new tooth. Dental Implants are often the best solution to a missing tooth because they look and feel just like natural teeth. They also do not have to be cut with a drill to provide support which means that the quality of the adjacent teeth is not sacrificed.

Some advantages include:

  • They make your teeth look more pleasing and give you a natural smile.
  • Dental implants look and feel just like natural teeth and provide the same functionality with a long-lasting method.
  • They are very natural, so they can help improve your confidence and replace the gaps in your mouth.
  • They will take the pain or sensitivity you have been experiencing away and enable you to enjoy the foods you love again.
  • They can also help to support your bone structure within the jaw and sustain your facial tissues.
  • The success rate of dental implants is extremely high. When inserting the implants, the quality of the adjacent teeth is not sacrificed.

The ideal candidate for implants will already have good oral and general health, and they must also have adequate bone available. This is what the implant will be fused onto, so there must be enough there to support the implant. The patient must also be able to look after their oral health, so once the implants are fitted, we know they will last. The insertion of the implants can be carried out relatively quickly and with minimal discomfort and will not require a general anaesthetic. Here at Dorking Smiles, we use the highest level of care and the most up-to-date modern techniques meaning that treatment usually is far less painful than you might think.

Maintaining good oral health is essential once you have received the dental implant treatment. This is to ensure that the implants will last and keep their functionality and help minimise any further problems occurring with your teeth. The implants are a great way to replace missing teeth and create an attractive smile, and we will help you through the whole process.

Prosthetics

Unfortunately, tooth loss is something that affects millions of people every year, but we can improve the appearance of your smile using prosthodontics. Prosthodontic dentistry is an excellent and efficient method to use for tooth loss.

We know that the importance of the comfort of dentures is vital, so here at Dorking Smiles, we take time to ensure your dentures feel as natural as possible and fit perfectly. Because you will be wearing dentures for most of the day, it is important that they are comfortable and fit right. They also need to fit properly to ensure that they do not irritate your gums or cause problems while eating.

We will help you with each step of your process and ensure that we work with you to get the perfect denture. Working with you in your appointments and consultations, we can assess your teeth, mould, and fit your dentures to ensure their functionality and longevity.
